/i/Going-back-to-school-retro-style/Parents it’s almost time for your vacation because the kids are going back to school. Yeah…oh sorry kiddies! I keep hearing from parents that the summers seem to be getting longer, but not from my best friend R the teacher. Well I wish everyone a great back to school year and may you go back with a little retro style…In school crayons were my favorite so I could color outside of the box. I can still remember the day when I discovered the Glitter and Metallic crayons seen here on Amazon. My world was rocked and my cheerleader signs got bigger and more colorful. Read about my cheerleader days in this moving from Canada to America post.Choosing the first day of school outfit was such an ordeal. I sat on the phone with both my girl and guy friends to determine the right look. Some things never change huh? I still feel like this when I start a new job.For a back to school retro look, every child needs a pair of high socks with a lunchbox. Pair the socks with a Catholic Girl skirt and you’ll be the talk of the school. Unless you actually go to Catholic School!Lunch is another difficult thing to control on your first day. Parents can pack the lunch and add some fun colorful paper cups to hold the food. Let’s leave the toothpicks out…ok?Back to school fashion is fun for girls. A dress with matching tights and clunky dark boots makes for an adorable outfit.Paper Mate pens are a colorful way of going retro in school.Oh how I miss having this school desk with my friends around me. Maybe I should get one of these desks for home. Would I even fit anymore? Is it creepy or cute for an adult to carry a lunchbox sweetie? To all the kiddies and parents out there, happy almost back to school week. You’ve all hung in there so well. No go out there and buy some back to school retro fashions that would make me proud! I know you can do it. What was the item you just had to have for school when you were a child lovely?Thu, 19 Aug 2010 17:00:01 -0500What does your lady really want to hear?

To business professionals, the idea of dating simply feels like it is not an option. The demand of our jobs or personal lives makes the idea of actively seeking a relationship seem impossible. For many, the common thought is that a relationship is something we will pursue when things “slow down”, next month or next year or who knows when.
Given this situation, we find ourselves resorting to finding our relationships in the workplace as many as 30 of all relationships …

/i/Something-Positive-For-The-Children/Something Positive for the ChildrenI have written on several occasions how important it is to include children in family rituals, to respect their need to be part of the family drama. All of the family, each in their own way, struggle with the new reality that follows the death of a parent or a sibling. When I talk about grieving children of all ages needing care, continuity and connection, it is my way of being sure they are included and their needs considered.. I was recently reading about children’s need for approval, for recognition of things well done. Too often this need may get lost in the overwhelming grief that dominates family life after a death .but it is essential to what I mean when I talk of children needing care.A grieving family lives with sadness and often a great deal of tension. Often both parents and children may avoid each other hoping to protect each other from the pain they feel. In reality it doesn’t protect. In some way that pain has to be acknowledged. The best protection for all may be learning to share this pain. You may not always be able to immediately do something about it but being open takes away some of the tension. Both parents and children also need to know that everything they try may not be successful but they need to know that they are recognized in a positive way, for the effort. Under these circumstances it becomes even more difficult to remember the value of telling your child that you love them, of saying thank you for helping, however, big or small the help was. A hug or a kiss from time to time can be very meaningful. Although teen agers, in particular, can be embarrassed by a show of affection, making the effort and respecting the way they respond can be very important. Appreciating that your children too are having a difficult time is important. Ask about school, about how it feels knowing that their parent is dead or their sibling is no longer with them. Be curious but be respectful. It is alright if your children don’t want to talk but it is important that they know that you are interested. Some parents have set aside a special time on a regular basis when they do something special as a family. It can be going out for ice cream, watching a movie, making a family meal together, going for a walk or whatever you once enjoyed doing as a family. It may not be easy but to continue something from the past that gave you all pleasure is a good way to honor and remember the deceased. How this time is spent can be a decision made by the family. Children can choose what pleases them. If one of the children is involved in a local sports event this can be an occasion for a family outing to support the local team. If there is a large age difference in children let each age group have a turn , in choosing what to do. Sometimes in repeating an activity that the deceased was a part of and particularly enjoyed may be sad and remind the family of what they have lost. It is also a way of remembering the good times and capturing some of those feelings albeit in a somewhat different way.One favorite thing that I learned from a widow I talked with was that her husband enjoyed hot fudge sundaes. He always created a reason for an outing to the local ice cream parlor. She took the children to his favorite place for ice cream on his birthday. This brought back good memories and they all enjoyed themselves. Each family can find its own pleasure. It is important to see that grieving involves more than sadness by enjoying the gifts of the past in the present..Wed, 18 Aug 2010 07:00:01 -0500I should have gone to Kmart, I think they might have better blue light specials.

I think my friend is playing with fire.
/i/Girlswould-you-lie-about-this-to-be-with-a-guy-I-think-my-friend-is-playing-with-fire/Okay so one of my buds met this girl..shes nice for the most part. She had an abortion 2 years ago tho…and my friend is totally not cool with abortion..he would be devastated if this girl killed his baby. anyway..she said she that worst case scenario…if she did get pregnant by accident..far as I know they’re using controlprotection that she would not abort it…but I mean…I’ve never heard her say that she regrets her previous abortion..obviously it doesn’t come up in everyday conversation. So I guess I have a hard time believing a girl would not have an abortion just because of the feelings of the guy. I mean I think she just wants to be with my friend and then if she really gets prego shell run to planned parenthood in a second…I mean its not anything I’m involved with but I’ve often wondered if girls actually even care about how the guy feels, I mean legally, the guy has no say, when its in the girls body she can do whatever she wants to it. But how many girls would actually lie about this..i mean would you?Wed, 18 Aug 2010 07:00:01 -0500He NEVER tells me how he feels.
/i/He-NEVER-tells-me-how-he-feels/My ex-boyfriend and I have been friends for 8 years over-all, and dated for a year and a bit. I cannot deny my feelings towards him, which are really strong, but there’s a huge problem which is that he NEVER tells me how he feels. from time to time, he does, but very rarely. The even bigger problem stands here: a week ago, I saw him after coming back from a trip, and for 3 consecutive days, he wouldn’t stop telling me how much he loves me and all. Suddenly, the 4rth day, no more texts, no calls, no nothing. Bottom line: he’s a HUGE mood swinger, and I can’t put up with that, but every time there’s 1 of chance to talk to him I cannot help but grab it ! there’s something addictive about him.I’m in desperate need of good advice on what to do, this is crushing me by the minute :s !Wed, 18 Aug 2010 07:00:01 -0500Summer interview with my lil sis
/i/Summer-interview-with-my-lil-sis/Hope you are having a great summer. Well I just come back from a week with my family in L.A. and watched my little brother and sister spend their last days of summer. I love sitting down and documenting D who is a talkative, fashionable, funny, sarcastic little diva and the baby of our family. Can you imagine what it would be like going into 8th grade with an older sister twenty years older then you? Check out these other interviews I did with D a last yearSo take it away D tell us all about your summer thoughts…What have you done this summer D?Hanging out with friends, went on vacation a little bit, went shopping twice a week, water parks, sleepovers, cheer, went to the beach with friends, amusement parks and swimming. Are you excited for the summer to end?No, because school is boring and I can’t talk during class, but yes because I want to see all of my friends.Would you have rather gone to camp? No, I have a strong passionate dislike for camp because they tell you what to do and I’m not with my friends. Since I’m older, this summer I had the freedom to do whatever I wanted like walk to lunch or take the bus to the beach.Photo taken by Julie Michelle. How did you occupy your time and manage your money?I occupied my time by hanging out with friends every week so every day I hung out with a different friend. I also got 25 a week to spend. So D did your understanding of money change?Sometimes I had a lot of the 25 left over and sometimes I spent it all. Getting the allowance taught me how to not to spend it all in one day and if I had more one week then I could use it the next week. Are you looking forward to the 8th grade? What do you think it will be like?I’m so excited for 8th grade and I think it’s going to be the best year of middle school because it’s the last year. We will be in charge of the school, but it won’t be too fun because they banned cell phones from school ’cause so many kids were texting in class. What was it like coming to San Francisco and being a bridesmaid at your sister’s wedding? It was fun and the Hindu ceremony was very long. We got to walk around, talk and not have to sit the entire time. I liked my outfits. It was an honor to be there for you Lala as a bridesmaid.Thank you so much little sis D. We all loved reading about your summer fun and I can’t wait to hear about 8th grade. How will you survive without your cell phone? Tell me sweetie doesn’t this interview remind you of your grade school summer fun?Mon, 16 Aug 2010 21:30:01 -0500African Black Dating Women and Websites

/i/Hes-trying-to-protect-himself/New Answer – Yeah, he’s being a jerk. I know you probably wanted a tearful goodbye with promises that you’ll stay in touch or wait for each other or something, but he’s probably already sat back and decided he doesn’t want that. He had fun, had a positive connection for a brief period of time and will remember you fondly.
He is shutting down his emotions now because it’s easier to do now than after you guys have parted. He cares about you, and fears feeling that sense of loss and regret.
Does he realize that while his actions serve a purpose for him helping to reduce the pain of separation, that he is hurting you and making you feel usedconfusedhurt? Probably not. He’s more likely wondering why you aren’t doing the same thing as him in order to protect yourself from having a painful drawn out goodbye.
Let him know that him leaving is a big deal for you, and you would rather your last few weeksdays together be special and memorable than full of him being a jerk to make himself feel better. He probably doesn’t realize that what he is doing is bugging you a whole lot.
If he’s a gentleman, he’ll lay off the joking, but no promises that he will suddenly be romantic again. He is saying his goodbye in the easiest possible way for him.
P.S. When some guys feel frustrated, they deal with it through humour sometimes cruel humour, it’s a legit coping strategy, but if he is using it in this particular case, it’s having some added impact that he might not be aware of.Sun, 15 Aug 2010 11:30:01 -0500The 7 Issues You Must Discuss Before Marriage

Are You Trying Too Hard?
/i/Single–Looking–Are-You-Trying-Too-Hard/Single? Looking? Are You Trying Too Hard? by Isadora Alman, MFTThere are millions of single people yearning for a romantic partner who are doing nothing about it but wishing. We all know that doing something about achieving what you want makes it far more likely that you’ll get it than doing nothing! However, it is possible to err too much in the other direction – doing too much and too frantically. The danger there is burnout, giving up when you don’t get immediate desired results and going back to where you started out, worse than you were before because your optimism is gone. Below are some pointers to keep in mind in your search for someone special. Yes, it pays to advertise. However, if you tell everyone from your co-workers to your dry cleaners that you’re single and looking you could appear desperate, never an attractive quality. Better to confide in a few people whom know and like you that you are available to meet an interesting person if they know someone. Make sure to also tell them a bit about the qualities that attract you to avoid “anyone moving and breathing” syndrome. Give it careful thought and get some clarity on what you’re looking for. Taking aim is usually a lot better than a scattershot technique, whether in skeet shooting or sweetie searching. If, for instance, it’s important to you that a person share your political leanings, spend more time volunteering for the issues that concern you in hopes of meeting fellow idealists. Work smarter, not harder. Be selective in the dating sites and meeting places you chose to investigate and give them a chance to work. Visit any such place more than a few times until you’re sure it’s not for you. Then, and only then, move on to another one. Flitting from one to another only wastes your time and tends to be discouraging. You also need the opportunity to become known at a particular place, so others feel comfortable approaching you. Be proactive. As in the rest of life, just showing up is often not enough. Attending lots of events and then just standing around when you get there accomplishes little but wearing yourself out. Choosing a few events and then putting yourself forward while there is usually a better plan. Let yourself be known. Approach others. Engage in conversation with many people, not just the ones you find attractive. Everyone responds to a friendly person and tends to shy away from someone who seems to be only there to hit on a certain select few. Besides, you’ll be practicing your conversational skills. Do what you like to do and avoid the rest. Don’t go to a discussion group if don’t like controversy and quick thinking is not your strength. When meeting online if the written word is not your forte, avoid long email exchanges and opt for a phone conversation or a face to face meeting sooner rather than later. Admit your preferences and indulge them. Meeting new people is play, not work. If you feel yourself becoming discouraged and repeating yourself take a breather from socializing and focus on doing something for pure pleasure, like taking a pottery class or a bus tour of your city. You might meet someone when you least expect it specifically because you’re not trying too hard to impress and are simply having a good time.Don’t give up and do nothing. There are several someones out there looking for you. Give them a chance to find you.Sun, 15 Aug 2010 11:30:01 -0500Older Dating – The Vast Options of Dating Older People

/i/Who-do-you-think-made-a-mistake-me-or-him/So I found out that there was this girl who wrote on my guy’s fb “hon I love you mwah”. I panicked. it broke my heart. were kinda in an LDR but not really. no one knows it yet. so I tell him “how could you do this to me? I thought I could trust you. you broke my heart”. he explains to me “we’re just teasing around. don’t judge ok? love you mwah”.NOW, I know its not my fault for making that assumption because its hard to trust someone in an LDR. HE goes on fb and hid his wall posts by his friends from me. NOW, IS THIS THE RIGHT ANSWER? JUST TO HIDE EVERYTHING FROM ME SO THAT I DON’T GET JEALOUS? AM I BEING INSECURE? DID I MAKE A MISTAKE? He says he loves me. NOW, I’m not sure anymore. I don’t know if I can trust him again.Sun, 15 Aug 2010 11:30:01 -0500Relationships at work?

/i/Top-ten-fancy-camping-checklist/I must admit to you that I’ve never been camping? Am I missing out on something sweetie? Don’t be too shocked and please its not polite to have your mouth open so wide! It wasn’t always like this. If you had asked me this embarrassing question about camping before I moved to San Francisco I would have said yes. Doesn’t overnight summer camp in the Northern Ontario forests count for four years?Ah it so doesn’t.My Canadian experience of camping is completely different to my Bay Area friends. Camp Tamarack was a four star camp that kept their campers in cabins, eating in a dining hall, tennis courts, swimming in the lake and participating in summer plays. The only true camping part that I remember were the massive mosquito’s and canoe trips. But have I ever slept on the floor of a tent in a sleeping bag under the stars? Honestly sweetie, maybe once. Or have I ever thrown myself down a river for hopes that I’ll stay on the rafting boat and lived to tell the tale?Come on seriously, me?But mark my words, I would go camping if I had some of the comforts of home. So let’s list them for my camping friends. To bring me along I would need the following…Top ten fancy camping checklist1 My flat iron What there aren’t any outlets at a campsite? 2 Jelly shoes for the shower The lake is the bath…this has to be a joke!3 My Tempur-Pedic Swedish neck pillow4 Sigg water bottle5 Sunblock with at least 30 SPF6 Prescription coach sunglasses7 Music8 Grill9 Bug net10 Toilet paperAnd now that you know my dark secret about camping, do you think we can still be friends lovely? /i/Starks-Ten-Stations-of-Divorce/Why do I still feel so wounded after all this time? Mike stared down at his hands in his lap as he struggled to hold back the tears. It’s been three years! Why aren’t I over it? Is there something wrong with me? They’d long ago split up the property, dispensed with the legal divorce, won or lost communal friends, sorted out the bank accounts and credit card debt, but still, he thought about her every single day and ached.Divorce isn’t just a single-facetted event but rather one that unfolds and transitions through various phases. Even though you may consider yourself divorced, some aspects of your recovery may still not be quite completed. Mike was struggling to understand what was holding him back so I explained to him the concept of the Six Stations of Divorce that was developed by Paul Bohannan Divorce and After, Doubleday, 1970.Here are Bohannan’s Six Stations of Divorce:1. The emotional divorce – The challenge of detaching emotionally when it become clear the marriage is coming to an end2. The legal divorce – The process of dissolving the legal connection as married people in the eyes of the law3. The economic divorce – The division of money and property and the assessment your new economic situation4. The co-parenting divorce – The pattern of childcare and living arrangements which are negotiated and become established parentchild dynamics are often greatly affected.5. The community divorce – The choosing of sides by family and friends who sometimes become lost to one or the other former spouse.6. The psychological divorce – The redefinition of yourself as a separate entity so that you no longer relate everything that happens in your life to your former spouse. The “we” has become the “me.”The Six Stations don’t typically follow a logical sequence. More likely, you’ll accomplish bits and pieces of them as times goes on, lurching back and forth as you try to reach a comfortable place so you can move on in your life. Some people find that they never do resolve all of them, even in the course of lifetime. Like Mike, who has yet to settle the psychological divorce, their point of reference remains oriented towards the past rather than the future. But then, aren’t there many more stations than just six? Think about how complex the process was to get married and build a life together – all those years of decisions made and memories established. And although six stations may be enough for the person who powered the decision to leave, the one being left needs many more. How about these? Here are Stark’s Ten Stations of Divorce:1. The existential divorce – What was it all for? Did those fourteen years have any meaning?2. The historical divorce – What do I do with the mini Eiffel Tower we got on that amazing weekend in Paris? 3. The future divorce – I won’t have the future I’ve expected all these years and time is running out!4. The culinary divorce – Who gets to keep our favorite Greek restaurant and that breakfast joint by the beach, and it will kill me to know that she’s going there with him!5. The sense memory divorce – Oh my god! I hope I’m not seated at the dinner party next to someone wearing Dune.6. The calendar divorce – Is there any way to eliminate my anniversary, my spouse’s birthday, the day we met, the date of our first kiss, Christmas eve, Chanukah, Father’s Day and the Fourth of July from the calendar, and still come up with 365 days?7. The side of the bed divorce – Don’t I feel silly still hugging the left side of the bed when I’m sleeping there alone?8. The self-esteem divorce – I thought you said those extra thirty pounds really didn’t make a difference!9. The trust and love divorce – Next time, I’m getting a pre-nup!10. The hopes and dreams divorce – There is happiness in this world and it’s not contingent on being with George!Wed, 11 Aug 2010 23:30:02 -0500Eco-Friendly Home Design: Upside Down Planter Table
